The lecture will be illustrated with images of the teleplasmic manifestations (ectoplasm) photographed by Winnipeg medical doctor T. Glen Hamilton and his research associates in the Hamilton séance room. Mr. Meyer zu Erpen’s extensive knowledge of Dr. Hamilton’s experiments is based upon interviews he conducted beginning in 1991 with members of Dr. Hamilton’s family and associates and upon careful study of the T.G. Hamilton collection at the University of Manitoba archives. Meyer zu Erpen has appeared in several Canadian television documentaries about Dr. Hamilton’s research.

To explain the context in which the Hamilton experiments were conducted, Meyer zu Erpen will:

  • briefly share biographical information about the Hamilton family members and some of Dr. Hamilton’s research associates

  • explain the historical context of the Hamilton experiments

  • discuss Dr. Hamilton’s study of physical mediumship, the role of intentional actions by trance personalities, and the reaction of Dr. Hamilton’s medical colleagues and other Winnipeg residents

  • To help you decide whether ectoplasm is myth or reality, he will:

  • discuss the authenticity of the T.G. Hamilton archival collection and the question of photographic fraud

  • highlight the integrity of the Hamilton family and the other researchers

  • examine the relationship between psychic research and belief in personal immortality, and the value of physical phenomena as evidence of life after death

  • share his conclusion about the ectoplasmic manifestations photographed by Dr. Hamilton

  • This presentation was originally prepared in 1992 for the Manitoba History Conference. Since then, the lecture has been presented to Canadian Spiritualist church congregations and psychic societies, the International Spiritualist Federation Congress (Toronto, 2002), the Academy of Religion and Psychical Research conference (Philadelphia, 2002), the Spiritualist Church of Canada AGM (Milton, Ontario, 2008), and the Basler Psi-Verein (Basel, Switzerland, 2009).
